Low Income Public Housing
Public housing units are managed by Seattle Housing Authority. They come in a range of bedroom sizes. Most are located in apartment buildings, but some are located in smaller, multi-family buildings. People in this program:
Earn 80 percent of area median income or less as a household to qualify
Pay 30 percent of their household's monthly income for rent and utilities
Live alone, with a partner, or with individuals who make up a larger household
Meet screening criteria and have acceptable rental and criminal histories
Are citizens or have eligible immigration status at the time of admission to the program
Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8)
Seattle Housing Authority issues vouchers that cover part of monthly rent for privately-owned apartments or homes. (Please note, however, that the waiting list for vouchers is closed for the foreseeable future.)
Tenants pay the portion of rent not covered by the voucher and pay any utilities not included in the rent. People in this program:
Earn 30 percent of area median income or less as a household to qualify
Pay 30 to 40 percent of their household's monthly income for rent and utilities
May rent from any private owner willing to be a part of the program
Meet screening criteria and have acceptable rental and criminal histories
Are citizens or have eligible immigration status at the time a voucher is issued
Seattle Senior Housing Program
Senior housing units are managed by Seattle Housing Authority. One- and two-bedroom units are available in apartment buildings located throughout the city. People in this program:
Earn 80 percent of area median income or less as a household to qualify
Pay affordable rent at one of four levels, depending on income
Are at least 62 years old or disabled, if they are the head of household or spouse
Meet screening criteria and have acceptable rental and criminal histories
Important information
Waiting Lists
Most low income apartments have waiting lists. Some of these lists can take years until you can be called for openings. The key is to try to get on as many waiting lists as possible.

Apartment Rates
We provide current apartment rates on many listing pages. Most HUD listings do not have published rates. They are based on 30% of the renters adjustable gross income. You will need to contact the apartments to determine if you qualify for income based rent.
