Develop and operate permanently affordable housing that builds strong and stable communities through resident participation and leadership development.
Smha houses over 2,650 low-income residents who participate in community building activities in their mutual housing communities and surrounding neighborhoods.
Smha provides affordability to very low-income individuals, seniors and families.
Residents have access to a variety of programs in leadership development, community building, economic development, financial literacy, home ownership preparation through an individual development account program, and life skills for adults and youth. . All resident households are are encouraged to give four to six hours a month back to their community in one or more of a variety of programs, including identifying community needs, working in coalition with other institutions and organizations, orienting new residents, creating and enforcing house rules, safety and community watch programs, youth after-school programs, mediating disputes, helping monitor budgets and expenses, and other community building and improvement programs.
Through site-specific resident councils, residents participate in decision-making and program planning and evaluation. . Through smha's youth leadership program, youth participate in program development, lead programs, and participate as volunteers to assist the community.
