This affordable housing program is for individuals and families with moderate incomes allowing below market rents for those who qualify. The program is not a subsidized housing program as each resident is responsible for their full amount of rent each month. Rental amounts are based on the pre-set income limits in the geographic area and not based on your individual household income. To be income eligible, your total household 'gross' income must be less than the pre-set income limit for the area.

Open Doors was the first affordable rental housing community for low-income families in Los Gatos. The development was sponsored by West Valley Open Doors, a local non-profit housing advocacy organization, and MidPen Housing obtained the land in 1991 through an exchange with the Community Hospital of Los Gatos-Saratoga. When the community opened in 1993, one-third of the residents were employed at the hospital. The townhouses and apartments are constructed to resemble single-family homes, and the pinwheel design around a central green helps to create a sense of community.
